From The Chaplain's Desk
February 2009 Chaplain's Corner

By Amy Whitcomb, State Chaplain

  FEBRUARY 2009 --

As we move closer to the coming of a warmer season let us consider keeping the candle burning in our world.  We can mend our world in many ways.  Through compassion as we speak.  Our speech can be a tool or a weapon.  It can build a life or destroy one.  The words we use can heal or hurt, inspire or injure, comfort or cut.  When someone you know is struggling with some life issue or crisis, speak gently using words which will heal, inspire and comfort.  Reach out with sentences that ask is there anything I can do to help you.  On those occasions when you don’t know what to say or there may simply be nothing to say, mend your world through your compassionate presence.

Mend your world by watering what you want to grow.  Wherever you see something being done well, acknowledge it.  Whenever you see someone responding with kindness and compassion, offer a positive response such as “I admire what you just did.”  Whenever you are inspired by another person’s words or deeds, let them know the impact they had on your mind and spirit.  Whenever you do that, you are watering what you want to grow and see more of.

Let us all keep that candle burning as we try to mend our world and make it a better place to live.
