Connecticut welcomes National Master Bill Steel |

National Master William Steel will represent the National Grange as National Representative to the 123rd Annual Session of the Connecticut State Grange, Oct. 18-20. The session will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell.
Brother Steel was the National Representative to the 2005 and 2002 Sessions in Cromwell and Plainville, CT respectively.
William A. Steel is a native of western Pennsylvania. He graduated from Freedom Area High School and Geneva College with a B.S. in Chemistry.
Steel worked as a chemist for the Duquesne Light Company at the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania from 1961-1968. In 1969, he became the Director of Youth and Young Married Activities for the National Grange in Washington, D.C. At the National Grange, he established and conducted regional seminars on leadership and parliamentary procedure, as well as supervised the production and supply departments. He also created the Grange-Farm Film Foundation. In 1982, he joined Brewood Engravers and Printers in Washington, D.C. as a sales representative and production manager.
In 1985, Steel returned to his family’s farm in Beaver County, Pennsylvania and assisted with the beef farming operation. He joined Aid Association for Lutherans, a fraternal benefit society, as a district representative. As a representative, he counseled people on insurance and investment needs.
In 1996, Steel became Master (President) of the Pennsylvania State Grange and served for six years. In this position, he directed legislative activity on agricultural, educational, and family-related issues for the membership of the Grange in rural Pennsylvania.
In 1999, Steel was elected by the agricultural societies to the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania State University and re-elected in 2002. He also served on the Board of Overseers of the Veterinary School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Steel was also elected Overseer (Vice President) of the National Grange in 1999 and was re-elected in 2001. In this capacity, he was instrumental in the formation of the “New Grange,” a strategic planning study and implementation for change within the 135-plus year old organization.
In November 2003, Steel was elected as the 21st Master (President) of the National Grange.
Steel and his late wife, Mary-Lee Hobbs Steel, are the parents of three sons, all graduates of Gettysburg College, and the grandparents of three grandchildren.
