Grange Youth: Mark your calendars!

By Charlene Espenshade, Youth Development Director (New Grange July/August 2011)

  SEPTEMBER 3, 2011 --

Greetings Grangers!

I am penning this column at “cruising altitude” on my way back home from a regional youth conference. While November seems like a long way off in the distance, before long Grange Youth will be descending on Tulsa, Okla.

On behalf of myself and National Grange Youth Mentors Camille Harrison and Joe Stefenoni, I would like to encourage Grange Youth to apply to participate for one of the National Grange Youth Recognition programs – Horizon Leadership, Trimble Legislative Experience and National Youth Officer Team.

For a full set of guidelines and applications, go to www.nationalgrangeyouth.org. Deadlines for each program is Sept. 10.

For the youth that attend the “Party on the Prairie” we will have an action-packed schedule. For the youth tour, we will be traveling to Oklahoma City to visit the site of the 1993 federal office building bombing. Grange youth will meet with a survivor as well as tour the memorial site. The community service project will be a part of the tour as we will make blankets for a local charity.

The other popular event is the costume party and dance. This year’s theme is “Superheroes.” So grab your capes, masks and create a secret “super power” and be ready to create some “Grange power.” Prizes will be given to the most creative costumes.

Youth day at National is Friday. The Grange youth will take center stage at several events throughout the day. The National Youth Officer Team will kick off the day by opening the session. The National Youth Mentors, state Young Couples and state Youth Ambassadors will be presented to the delegates.

At the Evening of Excellence, the Youth Ambassadors and Young Couples will be recognized. The night will culminate with the selection of the 2011-12 National Youth Mentors.

Mark your calendars and make plans to join us in Tulsa for the “Party on the Prairie.”
