| APRIL 16, 2009 -- Robert N. Deming, 94, died April 6, 2009, at the Pope John Paul Centre in Danbury. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Milliner Deming.
He was born in Colebrook to the late Harriet Thankful Moore and Homer Deming.
Mr. Deming earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Connecticut in the College of Agriculture and a Master of Science degree in child development from the University of Maryland. For 25 years he was Fairfield County 4-H Club supervisor. After retiring, he worked as a substitute teacher in area towns.
His hobbies and interests revolved around nature activities - hiking, bird watching, rock hounding, camping and gardening. He was a woodworker, a teller of jokes, a crossword puzzle enthusiast and an amateur magician.
He was a former member of the First Congregational Church in Danbury and a present member of Brookfield Congregational Church. He was a longtime member of Redding Grange and belonged to the Danbury Kiwanis Club. For many years he was a blood donor, as well as a volunteer driver for cancer and other patients.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children and their spouses and seven grandchildren: Betsy Deming Kobayashi and her husband, Naoto Kobayashi, live in Manchester, Maine, with their children Keita, Koji, and Takuji; David and his wife, Erica Eisendorfer Deming, are parents to Sophie and Charlotte and live in Carrboro, N.C.; Lawrence and Helen Grapinag Deming are the parents of Amanda and Collin and they live in Bethel; and Christopher and Ellen Cowperthwaite Deming live in Danbury; and a nephew,Robert Deming of Colebrook.
A memorial service was held at the Brookfield Congregational Church April 9.
