By Dave Roberts

  MAY 2, 2023 --

May 5: In-person Meeting & Program: “Young at Heart” hosted by the Youth/Junior Committee; Refreshments furnished by: Bill & Tillie Jackson

May 7: Riverton Grange hosts ceremony #23 honoring our Veteran of the Month, at the Barkhamsted Senior Center, 109 West River Road, Barkhamsted; 6:00 PM) -- Veteran of the Month: SSgt Daniel W. Matthews

On Friday, April 7, Riverton Grange met in hybrid fashion, both in-person and virtually using Zoom, to allow all members the opportunity to attend. Since April is National Grange Month, we wanted to have our first order of business being the obligation of new members Steven Arba Roberts of Winsted, and Kathy and John Johnson of Riverton.

In addition, new member Deborah Bahr Roberts of Riverton was virtually welcomed. Two visitors (Tim and Melissa Sweeney) joined our meeting in-person. Tim is the Commander of Riverton American Legion Post #159 with whom we collaborate each month for our Veteran of the Month Salute. We hope that the Sweeneys will soon join our growing Grange membership!

Our April meeting Lecturer’s program was focused on Easter and included a game called “Blow the Bunny”. This was a throwback Men’s vs. Women’s competition, so you can image that the competition was fierce. Multiple teams of two men and two women formed and competed again each other until all teams but one was eliminated. Each team contestant received a straw and had to blow the faux cottontail bunny down the length of the table and then the second team member had to blow the bunny back to the beginning.

The Riverton community hosted the annual Riverton Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 15th, with lots of activities for the entire family. Dave Roberts treated all Grange members to a free breakfast from 8-9 AM to support the local Riverton Volunteer Fire Department.

We received a Connecticut State Grange Community Service grant check for $150 that will help fund the mental health awareness education component of our fair.
