| APRIL 28, 2014 -- For many Vernon residents in the early to middle 20th century, the square dances at the Vernon Grange were the place to spend a Saturday night. For some dancers, the chance to "swing your partner" led to life time partnerships as a number of couples met on the dance floor of the Grange.
The wooden floor dates from when the building was opened in 1923. After years of dances, meetings and other activities, the floor boards have become thin and worn. The floor has a unique pattern reflecting its design as a meeting hall for the Grange, a social and political association for farmers.
To begin raising funds for the restoration of the floor, the Vernon Historical Society is planning a square dance to be held in the Vernon Grange on Saturday, June 21 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The event will include narration from caller Jim Gregory about common square dances from the 1940s and 1950s, especially those that were popular in the Vernon and Rockville areas. Municipal historian Dr. S. Ardis Abbott will provide background on the Vernon Grange as an important community organization. Jim Gregory and Bill Walach will provide music and percussion as a group of square dancers demonstrate the dances. The audience will have a chance to participate as well. Local members from the audience who came to Grange dances in the years past will be invited to share their memories.
The dance will be open to the public. Tickets are $5 apiece.
