Colchester Grange partners to donate to Haiti

By Ryan Blessing, Norwich Bulletin (10/29/12)

  OCTOBER 29, 2012 --

Poor people in Haiti will soon be getting a very special care package, assembled in Colchester by local children and other volunteers.

The St. Andrew Church children’s classes have collected food donations, clothing, money and other needed items to send to Haiti as part of Make a Difference Day, a national day of service on Oct. 27, sponsored by USA Weekend and the Points of Light Foundation.

Many groups have come forward to partner with the children’s classes at St. Andrew Church, adviser Cathy Russi said.

“Many ladies from the sewing group have been making pillow-case dresses,” she said. “They should have 40 or 50 dresses ready to send to Haiti once they finish. They have embellished the fabric to make the dresses look like a designer pieces of clothing.

”
The Colchester Grange has made a donation to help support the cause, as have residents at the Harrington Court care facility, who continue to collect flip-flops, new underwear, school supplies and food.

“The residents held a little bake sale (Oct. 26) to help raise funds to support the program,” Russi said.
Last year, the group raised money to send goats, which produce milk, to the impoverished country. This year another group stepped up.
“At this point, I have 12 people committed to purchasing a goat,” Russi said.

“That one goat given to a family will help so many people.”
The food that’s been collected will go to the Colchester food bank, the volunteers decided.
“They want to help people around them and those that are far away,” Russi said.
